The Artistic Evolution Behind Dragon Ball

Every art has a story, and each story has its unique creativity. The characteristics of an artists’ work hold a significant style that differentiates it from the norm. These unique and the best dragon ball z hoodies brought the famous Japanese artist, Akira Toriyama, to the pedestal when his works – such as Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump – became well-known worldwide.

The Artist

Akira Toriyama is a manga artist who was born in Nagoya, Japan. His first work encounter would be from an amateur contest held by the Jump Magazine to which he wasn’t able to get the first place. However, he was still contacted by Kazuhiko Torishima, that later became his editor due to his unique delivery and art style. At the year 1978, Torishima debuted on his first manga named Wonder Island.

Though, Toriyama’s success only begun after he created the comedy series manga named Dr. Slump. Thirty-five million copies were printed and sold all over Japan, while it was adapted to a TV series that lasted from 1981 to 1986 in which also earned a significant number of fans. Toriyama is already considered as “manga superstar” after the anime debut and had become one of the gods after his creation of Dragon Ball.

Impact of the Colorful Art of Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball is considered one of the greatest anime in history. Only serializing the first volume, Dragon Ball instantly made it to the top. Just in Japan, the sold copies reached up to a hundred and fifty-nine million in 2014 and have been growing ever since. This had continued in making anime adaptations, and movies, even some of the famous arcade games were modeled after the Dragon Ball’s characters.

Toriyama’s success is all due to his unique art style that differs from the modern anime style that highlighted human anatomy and logic. His colorful way of portraying characters that somehow is close to having cartoon-ish style generated a great deal of attention, especially from the younger masses. Despite the martial art genre the story holds, it was funny and exciting to read.

It has been recorded that Toriyama himself drew most of the scenes on the manga. He owned a studio named Bird Studio, which is a play of words coming from his name “Tori” which means Bird in Japanese. In Bird Studio, he only had a few assistants and said to have employed one at a time. The assistants only do the background sceneries and beta inking while Toriyama draws the drafts and the final character designs.

Toriyama is not only limited in drawing manga but also participated in drawing game characters and design works. Some of his famous works would be the character design in Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. Toriyama also designs blue Dragon, the reason why most of the characters have a close resemblance to Dragon Ball’s characters.

Final Thoughts

The evolution of Toriyama’s art style genuinely inspired many aspiring manga artists. His growth in the manga industry was marked by his art style that started to be simple as often compared with a children’s book art. However, his growth continued to last even after the next decades, becoming a legend that will forever leave the mark in everyone’s heart.
